Welcome to the xxx Chapter of Amigos de las Américas.
WELCOME!
LOOKING FOR A FANTASTIC SUMMER EXPERIENCE?
You have come to the right place! Amigos de las Américas (AMIGOS) is an international, not-for-profit organization with more than 30 chapters across the United States that provides unparalleled leadership and community service opportunities for young people while concurrently contributing to the well-being of hundreds of communities throughout the Americas.
Since its founding in 1965, more than 20,000 high school and college-age students have served as AMIGOS Volunteers. Through their training and service experience they gain life-changing insights about other cultures, effective civic engagement and their personal potential.
AMIGOS gives young people an extraordinary opportunity to rise to the challenge of independently managing great responsibility within multicultural settings. Extensive training programs teach youth valuable skills, such as how to build effective teams to foster sustainable community improvements.
Every year our volunteers spend six to eight weeks in a host country
working on different public service projects. In the summer of 2009, we
anticipate that our volunteers will live and work in the Dominican
Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay (View tentative
2009 project list). Throughout the school year, the
Peninsula Chapter prepares its members
for their Latin America
experiences through training in cross-cultural sensitivity, networking,
technical skills, personal health & safety, and the culture of
Latin America. In June, our chapter volunteers travel to their assigned
countries. Once in country, they join with volunteers from other
chapters throughout the United States. Volunteers are then placed, in
partnerships of two to four, in rural or semi-rural communities to live
for the summer. Please visit the AMIGOS
International Office website for additional information
about specific projects.
Life-long friendships have been built between AMIGOS volunteers and their adopted communities. Thousands of young people have learned invaluable lessons about cultural differences, community service, and their own ability to lead.
