In San Antonio, Costa Rica - 2007
"I was fortunate enough to spend my summer in a small rural community in Costa Rica called San Antonio. The community was home to 698 amazing, friendly, welcoming people that have had a major impact on my life. I had two parnters that I got along great with, and we painted the local high school and cafeteria and created a garden and held campamentos three times a week. Spending six weeks in the lush scenery of Costa Rica was awesome because it was an opportunity to experience life in a completely different culture and step out of my comfort zone and meet/work with amazing, energetic people that I'll never forget. It was a great learning experience. I lived with a family of eight and they owned the local store, and I was fortunate enough to work behind the counter. Not only did I improve my Spanish but I felt that I made a small difference in the lives of others merely by interacting with them and getting to know others. I encourage anyone who is interested to follow through and participate in this program. I know it sounds cheesy but it has seriously changed the way I look at life and I realize how fortunate I am and I'm very grateful for this experience."
