In Los Balsas, Panama - 2007
"During the eight weeks I spent living in Panama, I learned and experienced more than I had in the past school year. In that small amount of time, and in spite of language and cultural barriers, I made relationships with people I never knew I had anything in common with. The warmth with which my community welcomed my partner and I was touching. The first day we could hardly communicate. Even their hand motions were different! Slowly we settled into our routine, made friends, learned some Spanish. We taught classes at the elementary school, and helped build a "Welcome to Los Balsas" sign and some benches, but I feel my most important accomplishments were the relationships I made. By the end I felt like I had family there, and I know that they'll always remember me. I know it sounds cliche, but Amigos really did change my life. Every day something reminds me of my summer. I call my family in Panama regularly, and keep in contact with my partner. We became such good friends that she has already come to California from Oregon to visit me. I am very grateful for the experiences and friends Amigos has given me."
