In Los Angeles, Nicaragua - 2007

by Erin Riley last modified 2008-09-16 03:57 PM

"This summer I lived and worked in a community of 950 people in rural Nicaragua called Los Angeles. My partner and I lived with a host family that consisted of a mother, a father, and a six month old baby brother. We taught classes at the local primary school on topics like nutrition, dental hygiene, disease prevention, and environmental appreciation. We also became honorary members of the youth group which was made up local teenagers like me who attended the high school in the next town over. I'm not sure whether it was the late night bachata dance lessons, the amazing arroz con pollo that we ate on special occasions, or playing pick up soccer at the park, but I fell in love with the people and culture of Nicaragua and have learned so much about myself this summer. Although I'm certain I made a difference to the people there, it's nothing compared to the difference they made in me. Not only did I gain new friends in different cultures and cities, I truly gained a new perspective on the world and am so glad I chose to participate in AMIGOS."
